The Market: Business Travel plays a vital role in global commerce. Self-booking tools were promoting direct supplier connections in the late 1990s with little actual market impact. Many vendors have or are about to introduce new agent POS platforms that have the potential to create direct connections to the travel agency call center. The pending Department of Transportation GDS rule changes may allow suppliers total freedom to distribute their inventory in specific GDS channels. The growth of Orbitz's Supplier Link technology is creating a new Internet-based GDS. The ultimate vision of an XML/Web services-based travel marketplace is still many years away. However, the pressure on distribution costs will continue to make the subject of direct supplier connections a hot topic in the business travel industry.
