Hospitality
The Market: Hoteliers face unique challenges and opportunities in the new online marketplace. Historically, the hospitality industry has been plagued with its own unique technology challenges as many internal system lack realtime connectivity. In addition the often-fragmented ownership/management structure that is common within the hospitality industry adds a level of complexity to technology, distribution and inventory management strategies. The growing hotel merchandising model is providing a new outlet for distressed inventory, but causing conflict between the property, the management company and the online and traditional distributor.

Emerging Technologies:
  • Online booking engines - Hotel booking engines need to be flexible, intuitive and provide the lowest cost of distribution for the hotel property.  Traditionally, there are a number of layers of distribution technology between the consumer and hotel property with each layer charging a transaction fee for every reservation made online. This has caused many hoteliers to reevaluate how best to deploy an online booking engine.
  • Channel and yield management software - Many smaller hotels and resorts lack a separate central reservation system and thus rely on third party software vendors to distribute their products to multiple channels. Hoteliers need to work towards a single inventory view to maximize yield through all the available distribution channels. The continued growth of the merchandising model is putting unique pressure on the hospitality industry necessitating new tools to proactively manage yield.
  • W-Fi networks - The Wall Street journal recently labeled, broadband local area networks (LAN) based on 802.11 standards, popularly known as Wi-FI, as one of the 10 hot technologies to watch. The growth of Wi-Fi at small and chain hotels has been phenomenal. A property wide broadband network can be used for both internal operations and guest relationship management.
  • Integration of disparate property and reservation systems -Hoteliers can no longer operate disconnected systems for inventory management and reservations. New products are coming to the market to provide realtime integration between reservation activities and property management systems. Hoteliers need a platform to allow realtime communication for all internal and external systems utilizing emerging Web services standards. Interoperability between property based technology and reservation systems is critical.
